Hot Glass! study days at Nazeing Glass Works

Paperweight making

Hot Glass! is a groundbreaking study day that provides a unique first-hand experience into glassmaking.

Hot Glass Study Days are available for parties of between 40 and 50 people and take place by arrangement on a limited number of days throughout the year.

Participants will experience at first-hand most of the processes fundamental to forming fine glass, including blowing, pressing and hand-made paperweight making. They will also visit our museum, the first dedicated to 20th Century British Domestic Glass.

After tea or coffee on arrival, you will be welcomed to Nazeing Glass by Stephen Pollock-Hill, in whose family the glassworks has been run for the past 70 years.  During the day, in addition to the glass making that would be visible on a normal factory tour, participants in Hot Glass will split into groups of around eight to see skilled craftsmen creating hand made paperweights and mouth blowing wine glasses or tumblers.  Each group will have an expert guide to describe the processes used and the various products made at Nazeing, as well as answer any questions.

Alongside the glassmaking, there will be demonstrations and explanations of the various different processing and decoration methods used.

During the day there will also be two illustrated lectures on glass history and glass design by the BBC Antiques Roadshow glass expert Andy McConnell.  Between talks, Andy will accompany parties around the Nazeing Glass Museum rooms to see and discuss the many examples of glassware from other leading British glass manufacturers that are on display.

The price for this full day is £39.50 per person which includes a buffet lunch.
